Mystery solved: Drawer clean-up reveals Waratah's winning Wednesday Lotto ticket

A Newcastle grandmother and her family are celebrating after being told they won Wednesday Lotto division one – 52 days ago – with a winning ticket found in a kitchen drawer!

The long-running private family syndicate confirmed their win with NSW Lotteries this morning, ending almost two months of speculation about the whereabouts of Newcastle’s mystery winner.

Their 12-game QuickPick entry was one of six nationally that won a division one prize of $666,666.67 in Monday & Wednesday Lotto draw 3661 on Wednesday 17 May 2017.  However, as the entry was unregistered, NSW Lotteries had no way to contact the winner.

The winning grandmother and syndicate leader explained the winning ticket was one of several unchecked Lotto entries she found lurking in one of her drawers.

But when she checked the winning ticket at an outlet, she initially thought she’d only won just over $1,000, rather than a $666,666.67 windfall.

“Good gosh!  That sounds like a lot of money!” she exclaimed when she learnt the true extent of her good fortune.

“I don’t know what I’m going to do with it.  But it’s not all mine.  It’s a syndicate of the whole family!  It’s been going ever since Lotto started!”

The thrilled winner explained that running the private syndicate for about a dozen family members had become a treasured tradition stretching over many decades.

While the syndicate had won lower division prizes before, she said this was the first time it had won division one.

“It’s going to benefit a lot of people,” she said.

“As soon as we hang up from you, the phone will be running hot letting everyone know!”

The winner’s son and syndicate member confessed he was initially sceptical when his mother told him they’d won division one.

“I’ve been over once before when mum thought she’d won $200,000 on a Scratch-It.  It turns out she had mistook one of the $20,000 symbols for $200,000!” he joked.

The winning ticket was purchased from Waratah LPO & Newsagency, Shop 9 in the Waratah Shopping Village on Turton Road.

This week, a young Newcastle family won division one in Monday & Wednesday Lotto with another entry purchased from Waratah LPO & Newsagency.

Waratah LPO & Newsagency owner Michael Phillips said he was relieved the winners would finally be united with their prize.

“It’s incredible to think we’ve sold two division one winning entries in less than two months.  Hopefully it’s a sign of more wins to come for our customers,” he said.

“We’ve had so many customers asking us about this unclaimed division one prize.  Everyone wanted to see the winner collect their division one prize so it’s great the mystery has been solved.”

Across Australia, the Waratah winning entry was one of six entries that won a first division prize of $666,666.67 in Monday & Wednesday Lotto draw 3661, with the other five won by Queenslanders who purchased their entries online via thelott.com – Australia’s Official Online Lotteries.

The six winning numbers in Monday & Wednesday Gold Lotto draw 3661 on Wednesday 17 May 2017 were 30, 5, 25, 11, 27 and 18.  The supplementary numbers were 21 and 19.

The Lott’s division one winning tally has now reached 195 so far this calendar year, including 54 won by NSW Lotteries customers.
