NSW's wannabe Oz Lotto winners want NRL legend Johnathon Thurston as their new best mate

Blues’ supporters may feel their chance of winning has increased after Johnathon Thurston ruled himself out of tomorrow’s State of Origin game, but many New South Welshmen still want him as their new celebrity friend if they win a share of tonight’s $40 million Oz Lotto.

According to a new survey held ahead of tomorrow night’s series opener, a quarter (25.5%) of New South Wales adults want Thurston as their new best mate if they strike it rich.

Despite Thurston being a Queenslander and frequent State of Origin foe, he remains New South Welshmen’s top pick to hang out with.  His selection also proves the state’s love for NRL as while he was the top choice in New South Wales and Queensland, he was only the third favourite nationally.

Other popular potential celebrity friends for New South Wales’ new millionaires would be Hugh Jackman (24.0%) and, on the back of her performances earlier this year in Sydney, Adele (19.5%).  (See Table 1)

When asked what luxury experience they’d like to have with their new celebrity friend after winning a share in Saturday Lotto, almost a third of New South Welshmen (31.3%) want to be VIPs at the NRL Grand Final.

Other popular experiences with their new celebrity mate included a London pub crawl (16.4%) and private A-List party in Los Angeles (16.0%).  (See Table 2)

The survey of 1,199 adults, conducted by ReachTEL, comes ahead of tonight’s Oz Lotto draw, which is offering a humongous $40 million jackpot – the largest since August last year.

NSW Lotteries spokesperson Matt Hart said the results demonstrated New South Wales’ intense love of not only the NRL, but also great players like Thurston.

“Everyone has their own unique dream of how they would spend their Oz Lotto windfall, and more importantly, who’d they’d like to share it with,” he said.

“Many winners tell us they plan to pay off their mortgage, help family and friends, and go on a long-overdue holiday. But this survey also shows New South Welshmen have a playful side and can picture themselves hanging out with celebs and experiencing the good life after an Oz Lotto win.

“Whether it’s his awe-inspiring skills on the field, his down-to-earth nature off the field, or both, JT is the clear choice for New South Wales!

“So while he might not be running onto the field tomorrow night – to the relief of many Blues’ supports I’m sure – JT can rest assured he’s not been forgotten and has many people lining up to be his new best friend!”

The Lott’s division one winning tally has now reached 374 so far this financial year, including 103 won by NSW Lotteries customers.

Tickets can be purchased at any NSW Lotteries outlet or online from theLott.com – Australia’s official online lotteries.
