Could Friday 13th be your 'lucky' day?

Friday the 13th is often shrouded in superstition causing it to be considered by many as an unlucky day. With the second Black Friday of this calendar year upon us, 2017 could be the year you consider ignoring superstitions and embrace the day.

Regardless of if you fear or embrace the day, Friday the 13th traditionally sees a range of unusual superstitious beliefs come to light, and the issue of luck is one that keeps people talking.

The Lott asked almost 6,000 Australian adults whether they had any superstitious lottery rituals such as buying tickets from the same lottery outlet, playing with special or significant numbers or scratching off Instant Scratch-Its tickets with same coin.

The research, conducted by ReachTEL, revealed that around one quarter of total people surveyed were superstitious about where they purchased their lottery tickets. A remarkable22.1% of respondents identified with ‘lucky outlets’ that they believed could enhance their chance of winning, with New South Wales residents the most superstitious of players (refer to table 1).

Australia’s Official Lotteries spokesperson Elissa Lewis said that no matter what you believe in, this Black Friday was as good a day as any to buy a lottery entry or Instant Scratch-Its ticket for your chance to win.

“We also found that around one third (32.1%) of Australian adults felt more optimistic about their chances of winning if they chose the numbers themselves, with Victorian and New South Wales respondents feeling more strongly about this than any other state surveyed,” Ms Lewis revealed (refer to table 2).

“We often hear interesting stories about luck and superstitions from our players, including dreams predicting of a win, fortune tellers foreseeing riches, and quirky ways of choosing numbers.

“Recently an Instant Scratch-Its winner confessed to the Lott that after a crappy day at work she felt like she needed something to change her luck so decided to scratch the Instant Scratch-Its she had in her my bag. And as luck would have it she won weekly $1,000 instalments for the next five years!

“While no one can summon the winning numbers on a crystal ball, you can still take the time to carefully consider how you choose what will hopefully become your life-changing numbers!

“This Friday the 13th is the last opportunity in 2017 for customers to embrace the day and to turn the tables on their superstitions. With the $1 Scaredy Cash Instant Scratch-It’s ticket that offers two top prizes of $10,000 this could be your opportunity to make Friday 13th your lucky day.”

Last financial year, there were 144 Instant Scratch-Its top prize winners across the Lott’s jurisdictions who collectively took home more than $12 million.

The latest range of Instant Scratch-Its tickets are available now at all the Lott outlets. It can happen it an instant. It could happen to you.
