Are you living in a lottery hotspot? Victoria tops 2016 Lotto lists!

Australia’s 2016 Lotto hotspots have shown fortune is shining on Victoria, with the state taking home more division one lottery prizes than anywhere else in the country!

During the past 12 months, between 1 December 2015 and 30 November 2016, Victorian lottery players have enjoyed 156 division one prizes and have pocketed more than $244.6 million in division one prize money.

Victoria has been crowned the country’s Top Lotto State with 156 division one winning entries representing about 30% of the 503 division one prizes nationwide.

It easily trumped its nearest neighbours; New South Wales with 117 division one prizes and Queensland with 99 division one prizes.

As for the Victorian postcodes that have produced the most division one winners in the past 12 months, metropolitan Melbournians have been in luck.

Lottery players purchasing in the Victorian postcodes of; 3000 for Melbourne CBD and 3064 for Craigieburn & Roxburgh Park (northern Melbourne), have proved to be the most fortunate in 2016, topping the Victorian hotspots list for having sold the most division one winning tickets in 2016.

Each of these postcodes (3000 & 3064) boast selling four division one winning entries sold within the 12 month period totalling more than $9.4 million and $3.7 million in division one prize money respectively.

Hot on their heels selling three division one winning entries each are postcodes; 3029 for Hoppers Crossing & Tarneit (south-west Melbourne) scoring more than $5.8 million, 3072 for Preston (northern Melbourne) where $4.4 million in prize money landed and finally, 3038 for Keilor Downs & Taylors Lakes (north-west Melbourne) collecting more than $2.3 million.

Casting the net a little wider if you take a look at Victoria’s hotspot regions for 2016, it reveals that the Melbourne – north region has claimed the top honours, with 27 division one winning tickets sold in the area in the past 12 months winning more than $26 million in division one prize money.

Melbourne regions rounded out the top five hotspots regions, but were closely followed by the Murray region in sixth place with 14 division one winning tickets sold totalling more than $22.2 million in division one prize money, and the Goldfields region in seventh place with 10 sold winning more than $10.7 million.

Also notable were the regions of Gippsland, Geelong & the Bellarine, and Mornington Peninsula which each sold five division one winning entries.

$40 million of Victoria’s division one prize money was won by one happy couple from the town of Leongatha known for its dairy industry and daffodil festival.

The $40 million jackpot Oz Lotto prize was won in May with a 36-game QuickPick entry and has taken out the biggest prize won by one entry in the State in 2016.

The runner-up for biggest multi-millionaire created was a Melbourne man who won $20 million in Oz Lotto in August with an entry purchased online via

Regional Victoria also claimed the state’s second biggest prize with a division one Powerball prize worth $12.5 million won in October in the Goulburn Valley town of Tatura.

Tatts spokesperson Elissa Lewis said that the past 12 months had proven to be another winning year for lottery players around the country with many memorable tales of winners from 2016.

“Reflecting back on the year, there’s certainly a number of division one winning stories from 2016 that have really resonated with people,” Ms Lewis explained.

“Victoria kicked off its winning year in February when it claimed twin wins in Set for Life with consecutive, back to back 1st Prize wins of $20,000 each month for 20 years won in draw 197 and 198 won in Churchill and Irymple - by a hobby fisherman and a green-thumb!

“After an intense three day search in May, a $40 million Oz Lotto prize was claimed by a married couple from Victoria’s dairy farming town of Leongatha.

“In August a Melbourne man started preparing for a new beginning as a full-time traveller after winning $20 million in Oz Lotto!

“September proved to be a month for sharing with the $21 Million Superdraw delivering 11 division one winning entries worth $1.9 million each won around the country. Among them was a workplace syndicate of 51 hard-working aged care workers in Croydon North who embodied the saying ‘sharing is caring!’

“Ground hog day ground to a halt for a Maroondah city man who got the news on his daily train commute to work that he’d won $10 million in Oz Lotto!

“In October, a mature aged couple from Tatura declared they would finally take a holiday after winning $12.5 million in Powerball.

“To finish off the 12 month period, Set for Life welcomed it’s 15th ever 1st Prize winner - a family from Bacchus Marsh who plan to visit Santa in Santa Claus village in Finland and see the Northern lights!”

Ms Lewis said that although Victoria sold more division one winning entries than other state in 2016, it does not mean that a ticket purchased in that state has more chance of winning than any other ticket.

“While it’s tempting to think about rushing to the lotto hotspots to buy your next ticket, lotto players should remember that lottery games are entertaining games of chance and every number on your ticket has an equal chance of being drawn, no matter where you buy your ticket,” Ms Lewis said.

“There’s no way of knowing where the next big lotto prize will land and there’s only one way to improve your chances of winning – buy a ticket!”

The highly anticipated release of Australia’s 2016 Lotto Hotspots comes as the countdown begins to the $31 Million NYE Megadraw on 31 December 2016! Imagine what you could add to your New Year’s Resolution List if you became a midnight millionaire!

Tatts is expecting a lot of interest in the $31 Million NYE Megadraw, so customers are advised to get in early and purchase their entry for the chance to start 2016 with a bang and a chance to share in the massive $31 million division one prize pool.

“It’s always been our plan that if we won the lottery, even $1 million, that we would share the money with many good causes – and now that plan has just grown a lot bigger. Giving some back is what it’s all about; we fully believe in that. The biggest change for us after winning will be being able to retire and not being under the clock.”– Leongatha couple, $40 million Oz Lotto, May 2016

“$20 million is just off the charts! It just opens up a pandora’s box of opportunities. We’ll just wait and see! I could certainly become a full-time traveller now!” – Melbourne man, $20 million Oz Lotto, August 2016

“We’ve been thinking about taking an overseas holiday for years – one or two places come to mind. It’s all starting to sink in now and so far we’re managing to keep a lid on it!” – Tatura couple, $12.5 million Powerball, October 2016

"Fair dinkum! Wow, wow, wow, WOW! I’m a keen hobby fisherman so whenever I get the chance and the weather is good, I’m out in my boat! Now I’ll have a lot less worries and a lot more time to spend fishing!" – Churchill, Set for Life, February 2016

"We’ve got the first lot planned! We’re going to hire a house boat to take a trip down the Murray River with our family to celebrate! I’ll also be able to expand my garden as I’m a bit of a green-thumb! We can also take a well-deserved holiday for the first time in 45 years!" – Irymple, Set for Life, February 2016

"I put together the syndicates for our workplace for the big draws - I hang signs up all around the place for $2 to enter, and this time we’ve cracked it! It works out to be roughly a bit over $37,000 each – which we are all extremely grateful for, we’ve got nothing to complain about! A lot of people have said you don’t know how much this has helped me!" – Croydon North Aged Care workers, TattsLotto Superdraw, September 2016

"I can’t think straight! I am so surprised, I am off the planet! I’m tripping off the moon, off the planet! Geez I can’t believe it! It’s going to change my life! Hopefully I don’t get struck by lightning on the way home. I think I might be getting a new car and taking a holiday overseas. I’ll be able to help family out and it’ll put me on a bright path for my future." – Maroondah City man, $10 million Oz Lotto, September 2016.

"Oh my god! Oh my god! We’ve been struggling for so long! That’s the most amazing thing! I’m pacing around the place, I can’t stand still! We’ve had nothing in life and we’ve been to hell and back. Now I feel like the luckiest woman in the world!" – Bacchus Marsh woman, Set for Life, November 2016
