Winners Profile

Geldings have dominated this race winning 20/31 editions, including the last two (Kushadasi and Escado).

Eight colts have been successful, the last being Zabeelionaire for Leon Corstens in 2012.

Just three fillies have saluted since 1984 – Zarita (2008), Showella (1999) and Mapperley Heights (1984).

Form

25 of those successful since 1984 have come via group or listed racing, with six winning and another seven placed.

Seven winners have come through the Group 2 VRC St. Leger Stakes, with four completing the VRC St. Leger/SA Derby double; Big Pat (2001), Count Chivas (1995), Shiva’s Revenge (1991) and Shark’s Fin (1987).

In 2009, Rebel Raider completed the listed Chairman’s Stakes/SA Derby double, while a year earlier, Zarita notched the Australasian Oaks/SA Derby double.

Betting

Six of the last nine favourites have won, but overall, it’s just 12/31.

21 winners since 1984 have started at single-figure odds.

Interestingly, there has only been one odds-on favourite in the last three decades. That was King’s High ($1.80), which finished fourth to Sea Brigand in 1989.

Ten winners have started at $10 or better, with several bolters – Tails Of Triomphe ($51) in 2005, Pantani ($31) in 2002, Bulta ($51) in 1998 and Cheviot ($61) in 1996.

Barriers

Barriers 5 and 16 are the most successful producing five winners each since 1984. Gates 1 & 2 are next best with four each.  The last three winners have all drawn 3 or better.

No horse has been successful from barrier 6, 9 or 14.

The last winner from the outside gate was Peter Snowden’s Kidnapped (16/16) in 2010. Testafiable 16/16, Tails Of Triomphe 16/16, Markham 16/16 and Sir Zephyr 16/19 all overcame this barrier.

The last runner to leave the inside gate and win was Escado in 2013.

Jockeys

With victories in 2013 and 2011, Victorian Ben Melham has the perfect record; 2/2.

Damien Oliver 5: 1-0-2, Kerrin McEvoy 4: 1-0-2, Steven Arnold 10: 1-2-0, Claire Lindop 7: 1-0-1, Joe Bowditch 6: 1-1-0, Paul Gatt 13: 1-1-0, Jason Holder 10: 1-0-0 & Dwayne Dunn 12: 0-1-1.

Trainers

Cliff Brown is the envy of trainers saddling up three runners for three wins; Blue Murder (2000), Markham (1997) and Cheviot (1996)

Victorian Lee Freedman (12: 2-2-2) and local Leon MacDonald (9: 2-0-1) have won the SA Derby twice each.
