Australia 1-12

There’s a feeling among the Kiwis that they can genuinely match it with the Aussies now – and that a victory over a full-strength Kangaroos outfit would no longer be regarded as an upset. A win this Friday will go a long way to proving their point. There’s no denying the Aussies are an ageing unit. And the Kiwis have some of the most exciting players in the world. But when it comes to the crunch at Suncorp, I still expect Australia’s class to shine through. Smith and Cronk will control the play. Thurston will send blokes through gaps. Greg Inglis will be Greg Inglis. It’ll be a tight one and the Kiwis will start strongly. But the Aussies will get home.

This clash might have lost some of its lustre now it is not a fully-fledged knock ’em down, drag ’em out fight for NSW jerseys. But it will still be an intriguing clash. For blokes like Matt Moylan, James Maloney, Dylan Walker, Josh Reynolds, Andrew Fifita, Wade Graham, David Klemmer and Kade Snowden, it is a chance to prove to Laurie Daley they are worthy of a sky blue jersey. And for young guns like James Tedesco, Jack Bird, James Roberts and Ryan James it is an early taste of what rep footy is all about. The game ended in a 26-all draw last year, but City look to have a few too many weapons this time around.

1st Try Scorer - Solomone Kata

For sheer passion and bone-rattling hits, this will be the match of the weekend. The ground is still shaking out at Penrith from when these two met two years ago. Tonga were big winners in that game and they look to have a bit more firepower in this one, with the likes of Tuimoala Lolohea, Konrad Hurrell, Solomone Kata, Sika Manu and Manu Ma’u. Samoa have plenty of strike power of their own, though, with Josh McGuire, Frank Pritchard, Joey Leilua, Tautau Moga and Tim Simona. It’s tough to split these two, but one thing’s for sure – the hits will be huge, the stadium will be heaving.

1st Try Scorer - Marika Koroibete

Fiji have the edge in NRL experience, with eight of their squad having tasted top-grade footy. And there are some superstars among them. Fiji’s back three of Kevin Naiqama, Marika Koroibete and Eto Nabuli will light up Cbus Stadium. Api Koroisau will be a constant threat and back-rowers Jayson Bukuya and Korbin Sims will be lethal. But don’t discount the passion of the Kumuls – after all, PNG is the only country in the world where rugby league is the national sport. There are 11 members of the PNG Hunters Intrust Super Cup side in Mal Meninga’s squad, and this will be a perfect chance for them to step up to the next level.
