The Phoenix are yet to record a win in their past three appearances, conceding six goals and surprisingly haven’t found the net in attack. Another home loss at the ‘Cake Tin’ would all but end any chance of a maiden premiership title for the club but more importantly will exhaust the team of winning momentum ahead of the finals series. The Mariners season by comparison has been in stark contrast to their third placed finish last season.  A win last round over the WSW will give them confidence but with not a great deal other than pride to play for, I think the Phoenix can turn things around and get back on the score sheet.

It is still hard to believe that Sydney FC are the only undefeated team away from home this season. They also boast the best away goal stats in the A-League, which has been a catalyst for an improved defensive outfit under coach Graham Arnold. Newcastle’s season of misery received a brief ray of light with a win last week against league leaders Melbourne Victory, but with only one home win this season the odds are against them to record their first win against the Sky Blues since Dec 2012. Sydney need all three points to stay within reach of the Victory in the race for the Premier’s Plate and after a dominant 3-0 win over an embattled Perth Glory, will be difficult to beat with no fear of a long road trip.

Adelaide suffered a disappointing loss to finals bound Brisbane Roar at Coopers and will need to return to early season form that had them tipped as one of the teams to take out the Premiership. The Wanderers don’t have a great recent record against the Reds with their last win coming back in 2013. With only three wins for the entire season, it would be brave to tip against Adelaide. With Marcelo Carrusca being a late withdrawal, Sergio Cirio looks to be great value in the goal scorer exotic market. The Spaniard has scored five goals in seven A-league appearences this season, including a last-minute winner when these sides met in Round 18.

Melbourne Victory are in the box seat to secure the club’s first Premiership since the 2008-09 season. Besart Berisha returned to Suncorp Stadium and picked up where he left off, scoring his 33rd goal from only 41 games at his former home venue.  In a strange move due to the rescheduled Round 18 fixture the two teams line up again in what could ultimately decide the premierships. Roar showed good signs early but allowed the Victory to dictate the match before turning things around in the second half. I just think the Roar may have learnt some lessons and could square the ledger on Saturday night.   Looking at the price the Roar are great value.

Given the dark clouds hovering over the Perth Glory club it is hard to imagine it won’t have an effect on their preparation for Sunday’s game against Melbourne City. It appears highly unlikely they will be playing finals football this year and finding a motivation will be a huge challenge for coach Kenny Lowe. I like Melbourne City’s chances in this one given they are yet to taste defeat to the Glory this season and have kept clean sheets in four of their last five matches. Although the draw is awfully good value considering both games this season have ended with the points shared.
