Winners Profile

Colts have a terrific record in this event winning 15 of the last 32 editions and they have been successful in three of the last four.

Geldings have won 10 and fillies 7, the last gelding being Shootout (2010), while Mosheen was the last filly in 2012.

19 winners in the last three decades had either won or were placed at group level at their previous start (11 winners & 8 placed).

12 winners had their final lead up run in the Group 2 Hobartville Stakes (Dissident 2014, Ilovethiscity 2011, Fairway 2000, Arena 1999 & High Regard 1988 completed the Hobartville/Randwick Guineas double).

Just eight favourites have saluted since 1983, the last being Ilovethiscity ($1.90) in 2011.

Seven winners in the last three decades have started at double figure odds, the last being Dissident ($11) in 2014.

There have been a handful of bolters – Metal Bender ($21 in 2009), Sharscay ($81 in 1995) and Dolcezza ($51 in 1986).
The last odds-on favourite to get rolled was Danewin ($1.90) in 1995.

19 of the last 32 winners have jumped from single figure barriers.

The last horse to win from barrier 1 was Fairway in 2000.

Five horses have overcome the outside barrier to win. Interestingly it’s been gate 14 on four occasions and 11 the other time.

The last horse to jump from the outside stall and win was Niello (11/11) in 2004. Tycoon Lil (1998), Western Red (1994), Veandercross (1992) and Beechcraft (1984) all overcame gate 14.

No horse has won from barriers 6 or 7 since 1983.

Gates 2, 4, 11 & 14 have produced four winners each.

Of the current jockeys, Jim Cassidy has three wins (the same as the retired Darren Beadman). Cassidy’s record is 20: 3-3-3.

James McDonald has a win from just two rides in the race (It’s A Dundeel in 2013).

Blake Shinn has nothing show from four rides in the race.

Kerrin McEvoy 4: 0-1-1, Hugh Bowman 10: 0-2-1.

John Hawkes has enjoyed five victories in this event, the last being Mentality in 2007. His other winners were Niello, Fine Society, Arena and Octagonal. His overall record is 15: 5-1-0.

Though she’s a whizz at training horses to win big mile races, Gai Waterhouse has an average success rate in this event – 20: 1-3-2.
Premier Sydney trainer Chris Waller is yet to win this Group 1 having saddled up seven runners for just two seconds.
