Winners Profile

The Vinery Stud Stakes, officially registered as the Storm Queen Stakes, is a traditional lead up to the Group 1 Australian Oaks. The other key lead-up is the Group 3 Adrian Knox Stakes.

Form

16 of those successful in the last 32 editions came into this race with a win or placing at group level (7 winners & 9 placed).

Three of the last five winners had their final lead up in the Group 1 Coolmore Classic.

Mosheen beat the boys in the Group 1 Royal Randwick Guineas in 2012, while Miss Finland did the same in the Group 1 Australian Guineas in 2007.
Hill Of Grace (2000) won the Moonee Valley Oaks, Savannah Success (1999) scored in the Surround Stakes and Tennessee Vain (1988) saluted in the Kewney Stakes prior to victory in this event.

Betting

Favourites have won five of the last 10 editions, with 15 successful in the last 32 years.

Hot favourites, starting at even money or shorter, have saluted 7 out of 9 times in the past three decades, with the only ‘hotties’ to get rolled - Arborea ($1.80) in 1994 and Cure ($2) in 1987. In fact, since Arborea’s defeat in 1994, all six odds-on favourites have been successful.

The last ‘bolter’ to get up was Mirjulisa Lass who was $51 in 2011, with favourite Brazilian Pulse ($2.40) finishing third.

In the last 20 editions, only one horse (Mirjulisa Lass in 2011) has started at double odds or better. Interestingly, between 1983 and 1990 five winners were $15 or better in 8 editions.

Barriers

19 of the last 32 winners have started from single-digit barriers, but strangely, gate 10 has produced the most winners (7), with stall 1 the next best supplying five winners.

The last horse to win from the inside stall was Hollow Bullet in 2005.

No horse has won from gates 4 or 8 in the last three decades.

The last horse to win from the outside stall was Heavenly Glow (11/11) in 2008.

Jockeys

Hugh Bowman has won the last two editions – Lucia Valentina for Kris Lees and Norzita for Bart Cummings. His overall record is 11: 2-1-0.

Jim Cassidy has been in the money seven times (18: 2-2-3), with his last success on Electrique in 1992.

Damien Oliver (13: 2-1-2) enjoyed his last success on board Special Harmony for Lee Freedman in 2004.

Glen Boss 12: 1-1-2, Kerrin McEvoy 4: 1-0-0, James McDonald 2: 0-0-0.

Trainers

In the last 32 editions, Bart Cummings (16: 3-1-1) and Lee Freedman (12: 3-1-1) have won this race three times each.

Gai Waterhouse has enjoyed good success as well (16: 2-4-3).

Kris Lees 2: 1-0-1, Peter Snowden 3: 1-0-0.

Godolphin trainer John O’Shea has only had one unsuccessful runner in this race previously, while Peter Moody has nothing to show from nine attempts.
