In what’s shaping up to be one of the games of the EPL season, Liverpool and Manchester United  clash on Sunday night (AEST).

Although Manchester United sit in fourth spot with just nine games remaining, that could all change on Sunday evening. The Red Devils comfortably fought off fellow top-four contenders Tottenham last week, and next in the firing line is a Liverpool side brimming with confidence. With the Reds trailing United by just two points, Louis Van Gaal knows how crucial a win at Anfield is. Robin van Persie, who has had another frustrating season crippled with injuries, is ruled out with an ankle problem, however Radamel Falcao is in line to make a return to the starting squad.

Many Liverpool fans were calling for Brendan Rogers’ head when these sides last met, which resulted in a 3-0 win in favour of United. Since then, Rogers has steered his side to an incredible 13-game undefeated streak, managing ten wins and a trio of draws. Those 33 points from a maximum 39 on offer have brought the Reds back within touching distance of the top four, but all that hard work could come undone if they surrender at home on Sunday. This match will be the final time veteran midfielder Steven Gerrard lines up against United, and that added motivation could be what gets the hosts over the line. Gerrard has scored nine times against his club’s arch rivals, and he’s in the first goal scorer market.

Both of these sides are hitting form at just the right time, however it’s likely only one will end the season in a Champions League spot. Manchester United are favoured to finish in the top four, although Liverpool have also been well supported in the futures market.
