Liverpool welcome Manchester City to Anfield on Sunday night (AEST) in an EPL fixture just as important for both sides as it is mouth-watering for fans.

The start of the new calendar year has been impressive from Liverpool, undefeated since December 14 when they lost 3-0 to Manchester United. Fans began to grow frustrated with manager Brendan Rogers’ game plan in late 2014, however seven wins and three draws in their past ten matches has catapulted them back into top four contention. Since returning from a serious knee injury in Round 23, Daniel Sturridge has played just 160 minutes of his side’s past four games. Despite the lack of playing time, the England international has already scored one goal and set up a further two in those matches, and he’s to find the net first on Sunday.

The Sky Blues’ start to 2015 hasn’t quite been as good as Liverpool’s, however last season’s champions have dominated in recent weeks. Following a run of four winless matches, Manuel Pellegrini has watched his side tear defences apart. A fortnight ago, Stoke found themselves on the wrong end of a 4-1 score line before City obliterated Newcastle 5-0 last week. David Silva’s rich vein of form continued in the latter match as he added another two goals to his impressive season tally, and with a further six assists to his name this campaign, he’s once again proving to be one of the most treasured midfielders in the league.

Manchester City won the reverse fixture earlier in the season 3-1 at the Etihad, and a win on Sunday would reduce the gap between themselves and leaders Chelsea to just two points. Games between these two sides are generally packed with attacking action, with the last six straight matches producing three or more goals .
