Winners Profile

In the past 32 editions since 1983, 11 three-year-olds have been successful with the last being Fastnet Rock (2005). Nine four-year-olds have saluted in this period, six five-year-olds and five horses aged six or older.

Mares have won the last four editions – Snitzerland (2014) and Black Caviar (2013, 2012 & 2011). Overall, females have won this dash 10 times since 1983.

Black Caviar (2012) was the last horse to back up successfully in this race after taking out the Group 1 CF Orr.

21 of the previous 32 winners had won or placed at group level prior to winning this event (six scored at Group 1 and three others placed).

In the last three decades, 11 favourites have gone on to win.

Apart from Black Caviar (2013) who started at the prohibitive odds of $1.10, the last ‘backable’ favourite to salute was another mare Miss Andretti (2007) who was $3.25.

The most recent outsider was Scenic Blast ($21) who won in 2009 when Weekend Hussler (4th) was the $2.50 favourite.
The last odds-on favourite to get rolled was Queensland filly Gold Edition ($1.90). She finished fourth behind Apache Cat in 2008.

In the last 32 editions, barriers 2 & 5 have been the most successful producing five winners each.

No horse has won from gate 3 or 7 in the past three decades.

The last horse to jump from the outside barrier (11/11) and win was Nicconi in 2010.

Scenic Blast (2009), Miss Andretti (2007), Choisir (2003) and Placid Ark (1987) all started from the inside gate and won.

20 of the last 32 winners have come from barrier six or inside.

Of the current jockeys, Damien Oliver (16 rides: 5-3-0) has the best record. The last of Ollie’s five winners was Nicconi for David Hayes in 2010.

Luke Nolen also has impressive stats thanks to Black Caviar’s three victories and Magnus, who finished second behind Miss Andretti in 2007. His record is 6: 3-1-0. Glen Boss and Steven Arnold have two wins each.

In the last three decades, Lee Freedman has saddled up 14 runners for seven wins and two seconds. That’s a 50% winning strike rate to runners.

Peter Moody’s Lightning Stakes CV isn’t bad either – 12: 3-3-1.
