Two of Europe’s biggest clubs go toe-to-toe on Thursday morning (AEST) as Bayern Munich  host Manchester City  at the Allianz Arena.

The German giants head into this clash undefeated in the new domestic season and joint leaders in the Bundesliga. The 2013 champions couldn’t go back-to-back in Europe last campaign, thumped by Real Madrid 5-0 on aggregate in the semi-finals. Pep Guardiola’s men are expected to be up there again this time round, and the bookies have made them second favourites in the futures market. Bayern have a huge task on their hand on Thursday morning though, and they’ll have to do it without star midfielder Arjen Robben, who is in doubt with a knee injury.

EPL champions Manchester City had a tricky assignment on the weekend, playing out a 2-2  draw with Arsenal, the team Bayern eliminated in the Champions League last season. Having won two of the past three EPL titles, you would think Manuel Pelligrini’s aim this season would focus on European success. The Sky Blues have never experienced winning Europe’s elite competition, but they are well in the market  to take it out this season.

Bayern are warm favourites to kick off their Champions League campaign with a win, however City have been the better supported side at long odds. The English heavyweights beat Bayern 3-2  at the Allianz Arena in last season’s group stages, and punters are confident it will be Déjà vu in Munich on Thursday.
