Who Will Go The Distance?

Can Shane Van Gisbergen go the distance in the Sandown 500? Image courtesy of: www.adelaidenow.com.au

He's won nine of the 28 V8 Super Championship races so far  this season, so it's little wonder Jamie Whincup  is the favourite to take out the first of this year's enduros - the Sandown 500 on Sunday.

Under distance race regulations, Whincup has teamed-up with co-driver Paul Dumbrell in the No.1 car - the same combination which won this event last year, and finished third in 2010 using this format. With nine wins and five other placings, Whincup leads the Drivers' Championship from Mark Winterbottom  by 135 points.

But from a consistency point of view, Craig Lowndes  is second behind Whincup (14 podiums) with 13 top-three finishes, compared to Winterbottom's 10. Shane Van Gisbergen  has also stood atop the podium on 10 occasions in 2014, while James Courtney , Fabian Coulthard and Chaz Mostert  have all managed seven top-threes.

For mine, there's not much value in the Red Bull runners, but I reckon the $4 on offer with TattsBet on Van Gisbergen/Webb  or Coulthard/Youlden  to finish top-three looks inviting! Remember these main drivers have a 25 per cent podium finish record this year, so it might be worth a flutter as the teams tackle the longer distances for the first time.

TattsBet has a special offer on the Sandown 500 - $4 for a Holden to finish 1st, 2nd or 3rd. Online only and condition apply.
