It's one of the great events on the Australian racing calendar, and 221 horses have been nominated for the Group 1 Caulfield Cup run on October 18.

Headlining the nominations is Melbourne Cup favourite, The Offer , trained by Gai Waterhouse. After taking out the Ballarat Cup late in the spring of 2013, The Offer had a massive Sydney Autumn winning the Group 3 Manion Cup, the Group 2 Chairman's Handicap and the Group 1 Sydney Cup. While his main mission is the Melbourne Cup, don't be surprised if Gai aims The Offer at the 'Cups double', especially if there is rain in Melbourne. The last horse to do that in the same year was Ethereal in 2001. The Offer has been well backed on TattsBet to win the Melbourne Cup, firming from $67 to it's current price .

Chris Waller desperately wants a Caulfield Cup to put in his over-crowded trophy cabinet and has nominated 23 horses in the hope of cracking his first win in the 2400m staying classic. Among his charges are imports Our Voodoo Prince , He's Your Man  and Opinion , as well as Hawspur  who finished seventh last year as the $4.25 favourite.

Team Williams are preparing Fawkner  to defend his Caulfield Cup crown and become the first horse since Rising Fast (1954/55) to win this race back-to-back. The great Ming Dynasty also won it twice, but three years apart (1977 & 1980). Included in the other 11 Team Williams representatives are former overseas gallopers Green Moon  and Sea Moon , as well as new import Almandin .

There will be plenty of international Caulfield Cup contenders such as Cavalryman , Hillstar , Pether's Moon , Ambivalent , Admire Rakti , Admire Flight , Bande , Orator  and Sir Walter Scott  to name a few.

The numbers will be whittled down on September 9 when first acceptances are released, while the final field for the $3m event will be announced on October 14, four days before the race.
