Powerball prize claimed! Bonnyrigg workmates share $35.9M!

Friday, 22 August 2014 - The $35.9 million Powerball prize won overnight in Bonnyrigg has been claimed by a group of 15 workmates!

The colleagues who work together in Western Sydney contacted NSW Lotteries this afternoon to claim their prize of $2.4 million each and the accompanying title of ‘multi-millionaire’.

“It’s surreal. We’ve all been talking about it this morning and we’re in shock now but we’ll be celebrating together later!” a spokesperson for the syndicate told NSW Lotteries when they claimed their winnings today.

“The 15 of us play all the big lotto draws together, so we had to get a ticket in the $70 million Powerball jackpot.

“We went around and asked everyone to choose a few numbers to play on our Powerball ticket so it was a mix of our birthdays, house numbers and favourite numbers that won us the prize.

“After we’d collected everyone’s contribution for the ticket, we set up a store syndicate at Bonnyrigg Plaza Newsagency,” the syndicate leader explained.

The syndicate leader said among the group there are a number of different plans for how each winner will use their $2.4 million Powerball prize.

“There are mortgages to pay off, retirement plans down the track and a few people have said they’ll be donating some of their prize money to charity.

“No one will be out shopping for a Lamborghini today!” he laughed.

“Sorry, we don’t have much time to talk,” the syndicate leader told the NSW Lotteries official.

“We have to get back to work!”

In consultation with one another today, the syndicate winners have chosen to remain anonymous.

The 15-member syndicate purchased their winning Powerball entry from Bonnyrigg Plaza Newsagency, Shop 22 in Bonnyrigg Plaza, Bonnyrigg Avenue in Bonnyrigg. The syndicate won a total prize of $36,013,700.12 thanks to their System 9 entry type and each winner will claim a share of $2.4 million.

Tatts Lotteries spokesperson Elissa Lewis said workplace syndicates are common across Australia for big draws such as last night’s $70 million Powerball jackpot.

“Historically, we’ve seen that workplace syndicates are a popular choice for our large Powerball and Oz Lotto jackpot draws, and our Saturday Lotto Superdraws,” Ms Lewis said.

“It’s great to see that this group of colleagues has shared in such a significant windfall of more than $35.9 million thanks to their shared Powerball entry.

“Meanwhile, the Powerball prize of $35.9 million won on the Sunshine Coast in Queensland remains unclaimed!” she added.

“The $35.9 million Powerball prize in Queensland has been won by an individual unregistered entry on the Sunshine Coast.

“We strongly encourage all players in Queensland who purchased an unregistered ticket in tonight’s $70 million Powerball draw to check their tickets as soon as possible!” Ms Lewis said.

The winning numbers in Powerball’s $70 million jackpot draw 953 on Thursday 21 August 2014 were 32, 8, 5, 40, 19 and 7 and the all-important Powerball number was 12.

Powerball will offer a $3 million division one prize in next week’s draw.

Players have another opportunity to win big with a $15 million Oz Lotto jackpot this Tuesday, 26 August.
