Manchester City are at St. James Park in the early hours of Monday morning (AEST) to tackle Newcastle , as they begin their EPL title defence.

The Sky Blues have been uncharacteristically inactive in the transfer market, with only a few minor signings to bolster their squad. One signing that has sparked outroar between City and Chelsea fans has been the temporary loan move Frank Lampard has made to the champions. The former Chelsea captain, who made 429 appearances for the Londoners, originally moved to New York City, before announcing earlier this month he'll feature for Man City until January 2015.

Unlike their opponents, Newcastle have been one of the busiest in the transfer market. Five players have left the club and a further three loaned out, while Alan Pardew has already signed nine players for the Magpies with a couple of weeks remaining in the window. Much anticipation surrounds incoming midfielder Emmanuel Riviere, who completed an $11 million move from French outfit AS Monaco in July.

Newcastle have recruited well over the past few months, however it doesn’t look like it’ll be enough to compete with the big guns. Manuel Pellegrini will demand a winning start from his champion players, and if all goes to plan, that’s precisely what he’ll get.
