Behind the eight-ball because of a hamstring injury, Australia's best athlete Sally Pearson  is pushing hard for gold in her pet event, the 100m hurdles, at the Glasgow Games.

Pearson's defence of the 100m hurdles at the Games looked in real trouble two months ago when she tore a hammie. But the 27-year-old worked hard on her recovery, before some pre games meets, where her efforts have been encouraging.

The Olympic champion has opted not to contest the 100m flat, instead focussing all her energies on the 100m hurdles, for which she is the firm favourite.

But before her campaign began, the Queenslander was lucky enough to have lunch with, and meet, the Queen.

Off the track, Pearson has had a dramatic fall-out with Australian team management, especially head coach Eric Hollingsworth, with whom she doesn't speak at all. It's another unwelcome distraction and one she plans to sort out after the Games.

Pearson's main threat to consecutive Games gold over the short-course hurdles is England's Tiffany Porter.
