Essendon v Sydney
Friday May 16 – 7:50 PM (AEST)

Sydney: LWWWW

The Swans  are poised to stretch their unbeaten run to five matches on Friday night when they travel to Eithad Stadium to face Essendon  in Round 9 of the AFL.

Lance Franklin marked his return for Sydney last week in their win over competition favourite Hawthorn. The forward failed to impress though, and at one stage had no goals and seven behinds to his name. Kurt Tippett stepped up to the plate and was instrumental for the Swans in that game, kicking four goals. The Swans attacking quartet (Franklin, Tippett, Goodes and Reid), played for the first time together last week and will look to give the Essendon backline plenty to think about. With no injury complications for John Longmire to deal with, the Swans will look to build on their winning momentum ahead of their bye next week.

Essendon needs to turn its season around, and quick. The only positives they can take away from the past two games against the Bulldogs and Lions is that they’ve come away with the points. Their performances have been nothing rave about and if they didn’t have the rub of the green, they could have found themselves languishing in 14th with just two wins. But sitting in 11th, the Bombers can work their way into the top 6 with a win over the Swans and make a statement that they are a force to be reckoned with. Tom Bellchambers is yet to prove his fitness ahead of Friday night’s match and his absence will prove to be a massive blow for the hosts.

The Swans have been impressive in the last few weeks, notching a big win in Brisbane before edging past the premiers. Expect this to be a close game, in four of the past five meetings between the two teams the winning margin has been under 10.

As an added incentive, if you back a player other than Franklin or Tippett to kick the first goal and one of those two is successful, TattsBet will refund your losing bet (conditions apply).
