Three Group 1s At Rosehill

In shock news on Tuesday morning, it was announced the highest rated horse, Appearance, had been retired because of injury. That left Chris Waller's handy miler Boban as the leading nomination for the George Ryder, contested at Weight For Age contest over 1500m. With Appearance not running, trainer Guy Walter was left with another classy mare, Streama and Toydini. Chris Waller four noms have all won at the elite level. Last start Chipping Norton victor, Boban, heads the charge with champion mare Red Tracer, Doncaster winner Sacred Falls and injury-plagued My Kingdom Of Fife his other hopes.

There were 20 nominations for the $500,000 Rosehill Guineas, won 12 months ago by It’s A Dundeel. Cox Plate winner, Shamus Award, is the highest rated runner among the three-year-olds contesting the Group 1 over 2000m. Peter Moody has entered form runners Dissident and Cadillac Mountain. Bart and James Cummings will be represented by the consistent Eurozone, which has also been nominated for the Ryder. 

The third Group 1 is the Galaxy – a handicap over 1100m. Boom mare Snitzerland, from the Gerald Ryan barn, is there, along with her last start conqueror Villa Verde. Jason Warren’s Bel Sprinter will attempt to defend his Galaxy crown, after romping home last year. However, the six-year-old hasn’t won a race since.

On a day when all bar one of the races are group events, there is almost $3m in prizemoney up for grabs. The nine-race card includes also includes important Golden Slipper lead-ups, the Magic Night Stakes and Pago Pago Stakes, as well as the Epona Stakes and Manion Cup.
