The $150,000 B.J. McLachlan Stakes will be held the Gold Coast this year. It's a Group 3 for two-year-olds at set weights and often provides a good guide to next month’s rich Magic Millions. Favourite for the Millions, Barry Mitchell’s unbeaten colt Wicked Intent is the one to beat. Liam Birchley has decided not to backing up last week’s winner Saga Of the Storm, leaving Gai Waterhouse's maiden Right Of Way , which is currently 15th in the order of entry for the $2m classic, a logical danger. Ace local jockey Damian Browne has been engaged and has to deal with barrier 13. All other runners are at double figure odds with TattsBet.

The three-year-olds have their turn in the Group 3 Vo Rogue Plate. It’s over 1300m and boasts prize money of $150,000. Tony Gollan’s Flemington Spring Carnival winner Hijack Hussey is the highest rated runner in the 15 horse field, but the filly has drawn wide in gate 11. Adelaide visitor Deiheros comes north with an impressive record – nine starts for four wins, two seconds and two thirds. Lloyd Kennywell’s charge will jump from barrier 10 at his final hitout before the $1m Magic Millions 3YO Guineas in a fortnight.

In Sydney, Saturday’s major event is the Listed Canterbury Classic. It’s a Quality Handicap over 1200m with $100,000 in stakes. Gai Waterhouse’s classy mare Driefontein carries the number one saddlecloth, along with 59kg. She’s won eight races and filled the placings another seven times from 31 career starts for $2.24m in stakes. After pushing boom sprinter Deep Filed, Driefontein was five-lengths (tenth) behind Terravista in the Group 1 Darley Classic (1200m). Half her wins have come at this distance and she’s very good fresh. The consistent Dothraki and rising star Ball Of Muscle are logical dangers.
