With Sir Moments and Rudy looking to end Queensland's 23-year drought in the Villiers Stakes at Royal Randwick and topweight Mouro scratched, the $100,000 Brisbane Handicap (1600m) is wide open.

It is one of five listed events on the eight race program. In trying to find the winner, the Recognition Stakes (1630m) a fortnight ago appears to be the best guide. Rudy, which is a leading hope in the Villiers about 90 minutes earlier, won the Recognition by 1.5 lengths from Grayson Square.  A further 2.3 lengths back back in third was Darci Be Good , a top prospect on Saturday.

Other notable runs in Recognition were Noisy Ocean , which flew home from last at the 800m mark to finish fourth, Double Impact which battled on for fifth and Steel Zip , who was also a strong closer in sixth. Goldslick (7th) , Aldini (9th) , Abu Ben Adam (10th) and Hopfgarten (last) were also engaged, but their efforts weren't flash.

Trained by Rob Heathcote who is in Hong Kong with Buffering, Hopfgarten may be worth another chance as he’s better than his last two performances (9/13 & 13/13) and boasts a win over Rudy and Sir Moments last month over this course. He also had two victories as a three-year-old in Group 3 company.

The other Listed Races at Doomben are the Phelan Ready Stakes (1050m), the Calaway Gal Stakes (1050m), the Gold Edition Stakes (1200m) and the Just Now Handicap.
