The top two sides in Group D meet on Thursday morning (AEST) as Arsenal welcome Borussia Dortmund to the Emirates.

Arsenal’s 2-1 loss at home to Manchester United on the weekend condemned the Gunners to their worst start to an EPL season in 32 years. Their defence was shambolic and midfield unorganised, though there is hope in the near future for the North Londoners with the return of striker Olivier Giroud. The Frenchman has been out of action for three months with an ankle injury, and despite returning to playing and scoring on the weekend, he won't take the field against Dortmund. Arsenal failed to register him as they believed the extent of his injury would see him out until January next year, so Danny Welbeck is shaping up to be the lone man upfront.

Borussia Dortmund will also be without one of their own stars who made a comeback from injury last weekend. Young midfielder Marcos Reus suffered a ligament tear in his right ankle and will miss the remainder of the year. Along with Reus, Jurgen Klopp is also expected to miss Sven Bender, Mats Hummels, Jakub Blaszczykowski, Sokratis Papastathopoulos and Nuri Sahin. Lucky for the German outfit, they sealed a spot into the next round with a 4-1 win over Galatasaray three weeks ago. The 2012 runners-up are again shaping up to be a real threat in the tournament this season, and despite this remain a chance to go all the way.

Dortmund reigned supreme when these two sides met in September, easing to a comfortable 2-0 win. Injuries to both sides, however, has thrown a spanner in the works which is making this a real head-scratcher for punters.
