The Winterbottom Stakes is a Group 1 race held at the Ascot course in Perth. It is a weight-for-age contest over 1200m with $750,000 in stakes. Five of the last seven editions of this race have gone to east coast sprinters. In 2014, a handful of raiders have headed west for hit and run missions. Tatts Stats takes a look at the key facts heading into the second last Group one of the year!

Key Facts

Four and five-year-olds dominate this race. In the past 31 editions since 1983, 20 horses that age have been successful. (13 x 4yo, 7x 5yo, 7x 6yo, 1 x 7yo, 2x 9yo, 1x 3yo).

Just seven mares have won this event in three decades and five of those were four-year-olds (1x 5yo & 1x 6yo). This year, Magnifisio and Angelic Light are both 5yo mares.

A WFA Sprint over 1200m, inside barriers are an advantage with 23 winners (from 31 editions) drawn single digit gates.

Horses can overcome wide draws - in 2012 Barakey won from 9/9, Miss Andretti 13/16 in 2005, Double Blue 11/15 1999, Petite Amour 11/12 in 1994, Sir Tinka 13/13 in 1993, Placid Ark 10/12 in 1987, Fimiston 12/14 in 1986 & Casshoney 14/15 in 1984.

12 favourites have been successful in the past three decades, including 8 of the last 10. Seven winners out of the last 31 editions have started at $10 or better. (Hadabeclorka, which started at $41 in 2010, was the longest priced winner and Placid Ark, which was $1.40 in 1987, was shortest priced during this period).

Traditionally the major lead-ups have been the Group 3 Colonel Reeves Stakes and the Group 3 D.B.R. Prince Of Wales Stakes. 13 winners have come through those two races. This year, Shining Knight 1st, Testamezzo 2nd, Windswept 4th & Rock Magic 5th all contested the Reeves Stakes at their previous outing. Magnifisio finished fourth in this year's Prince Of wales behind Elite Belle, which is contesting the Railway Stakes.

The last horse to take out the Lee Steere Stakes/Winterbottom Stakes double was Fimiston in 1986. Magnifisio is hoping to repeat that feat 28 years later.

For the past three years, last start winners have saluted – Shining Knight, Éclair Big Bang, Ysmael and Magnifisio fall into that category.

Jason Brown Magnifisio is having his 18th ride in the race. His record is 17: 2-3-3. William Pike is chasing his third victory with his eighth ride, while Peter Knuckey (Testamezzo) has a win and a second from 14 attempts. Damien Oliver (Angelic Light) has a win and a third from his four outings. After finishing second on Moment Of Change to Buffering last year, Luke Nolen hopes to go one better 12 months later on the same horse, in just his second ride in the race.

Like Luke Nolen, Peter Moody hopes Moment Of Change can give him his first victory in this race at just his second attempt.

Just as a number of eastern state trainers have done in the past (Rob Heathcote, Lee Freedman, Paul Messara, Joe Janiak, Tony Noonan and George Hanlon etc.) Robbie Griffiths can win this race at his first attempt with Angelic Light.
