The Cleaner To Wipe The West

Mick Burles and The Cleaner are hoping to wipe the west!

Fresh from a brave third behind Hucklebuck in the Group 1 Emirates Stakes (1600m) on the last day of the  Flemington carnival, The Cleaner wants to wipe the west in Perth's $1m  Railway Stakes at Ascot. Like the Emirates, it too is a Group 1 over the mile.

And it's hard to knock the peoples' champ from Longford in Tasmania. The seven-year-old has had 14 starts over 1600m for eight wins, two seconds and a third. Overall his record is just as impressive - 45 starts for 18 wins, 10 seconds and three thirds, with $938,000 in the bank. His first mile victory came in a Hobart Open Handicap 28 months ago. Seven others have followed at Launceston, Flemington and Moonee Valley, with the best being in the Group 2 Dato Tan Chin Nam Stakes two months ago.

After that, the Mick Burles trained gelding took out the Group 3 JRA Cup (2040), finished ninth (3.5 lengths behind Adelaide) in the Group 1 WFA Cox Plate after a tough run and was third (beaten 1.5 lengths) in the Emirates.

Other Eastern state raiders chasing this Quality Handicap include the widely drawn Moriarty and Alma's Fury , as well as Smokin Joey .

However, the locals believe they have live chances in WATC Derby winner Respondent , who has put in three promising runs since a spell, and classy mare Elite Belle , who is three from three over the mile.

The other feature at Ascot on the day is the $750,000 Group 1 Winterbottom Stakes, run over 1200m. Click here for the rest of the horse racing tips for today.
