Liverpool and Real Madrid have the opportunity to renew their rivalry on Thursday as they clash in Group B of the Champions League.

There’s not much history between the two sides, with only two matches being contested by Real and Liverpool – both coming in early 2009. It was a Champions League two-legged knockout round tie, one the Reds won emphatically. They beat Real in Madrid 1-0 before smashing them at home 4-0 , however a lot has changed since then. Although enjoying a second-place finish in the EPL last year, the Reds have struggled again this season. They head into this match with attacking problems coming left, right and centre, with Daniel Sturridge absent with injury and new signing Mario Balotelli misfiring in front of goal.

The same couldn’t be said by Real Madrid, who are finding it hard not to pile on the goals. In their five latest matches in La Liga, they’ve racked up 25 goals, 13 of which have come from Cristiano Ronaldo. It’s an astonishing feat from the Portugese striker, who also has two goals in two games in the Champions League. There is some good news for the Liverpool defence, however, with Welsh winger Gareth Bale set to miss the clash with a hip injury.

Carlo Ancelotti’s men dominate the head-to-head market, and punters are seeing value in the short price. Considering the devastating form the Spaniards are in, it’s no wonder why all the big bets are coming in for last year’s champions.
