AS Roma v Bayern Munich

Stadio Olimpico

Wednesday October 22 –   4:45am (AEST)

Bayern travel to the capital of Italy to take on Roma in their Group E Champions League match.

The German giants were brutal on the weekend, crushing Werder Bremen 6-0 in Munich. That win ensured Pep Guardiola’s men maintain a four-point lead at the top of the Bundesliga after eight rounds, and their form in Europe’s elite league has been a similar story. Bayern got off to a flyer with a win against Manchester City before downing CSKA Moscow just over a month ago. Teams in Europe have had a better time keeping in touch with the 2013 champions however, with both games ending in a 1-0 .

Roma head into Wednesday morning’s match not just second in Group E, but second in the Serie A as well. A 3-0 win over strugglers Chievo on the weekend keeps the pressure on front runners Juventus, and Rudi Garcia’s side will look to get at least a draw at home against the Bavarians. That’s what they accomplished when they travelled to Manchester City last time in the Champions League, leaving England with a point following a 1-1 draw. That match saw the oldest ever player in Francesco Totti score a goal in the European competition, and he’s the one Bayern defenders must keep an eye on.

Bayern will be confident they can leave the Stadio Olimpico with all three points, but they’ll have to be at their best. AS Roma have proved time and time again they can match it with Europe’s big guns, but can they hold out a Bayern side that have been running rampant in attack recently?
