Gold Coast Racing Preview - January 4

3YO Handicap (QR5)

Kelso Wood’s Into The Red was scratched from Doomben last weekend on his way to the 3yo Magic Millions and can register another win for the gun Brisbane trainer. The son of Not A Single Doubt relishes conditions in Queensland, however, will have to contend with a top weight of 59kg. Another local galloper beginning to assemble an impressive record is David Kelly’s Flight King. He has scored both starts this preparation and is likely to lead from barrier six. Sept De Coeurs was backed off the map in her last start where she won easily at the Sunshine Coast while Ballingall Boy can run a cheeky race at big odds.

Selections: Flight King, Into The Red, Sept De Coeurs, Ballingall Boy

Benchmark 85 Handicap (QR6)

Despite burning punters his past nine starts, Arctic finally registered a win at Doomben a fortnight ago at decent odds with Larry Cassidy on board. Cassidy retains the ride this Saturday, but the question is whether punters will keep faith. Hi Son did enough to get the job done at Doomben and will appreciate returning back to his home track where he has won two from four and never finished outside the prize money. 1800m could be the query and barrier fourteen isn’t ideal yet Rikki Jamieson sneaks in well at the weights with a 3kg claim. Surface Tension is yet to win in town however could surprise for Sunshine Coast trainer Gary Duncan.

SelectIons: Hi Son, Actic, Surface Tension, Walhaan

Goldmarket Handicap (QR7)

The Gai Waterhouse stable holds a key runner in the $100,000 feature sending King Cobia north after a grinding win at Kensington earlier last month. The son of Exceed And Excel continues to improve his record as he works his way through the grades and is every chance of scoring again from barrier two with Chris Munce taking the reins. If he displays his best form, Morning Captain should be winning this race however the Gold Coast track hasn’t been a happy hunting ground as he has failed to place in all three starts on the tourist strip. Impressive performances this preparation suggest he can improve again. Trombone Alley will set the tempo up front and can feature from barrier eight.

Selections: King Cobia, Morning Captain, Trombone Alley, De Dozen Stars

Ladies Day Class 6 Plate (QR8)

A cracking contest to round out a great card is the last of the day, the Ladies Day Class Six Plate. Jacquetta looks set to explode under set weight conditions on her home track where she is one from one over track and distance. She drops back in class and distance to 1200m after a solid fifth in Listed company over 1350 at Doomben in the Just Now Handicap. Star Sammy has been enormous this preparation and steps up significantly in class after winning his previous two starts for Lawrie Mayfield-Smith. He has won both starts at the track and is two from four over 1200m. Mishani Pursader made up plenty of ground at Doomben last start and boasts an imposing record of three wins from four starts second up.

Selections: Jacquetta, Mishani Persuader, Star Sammy, Bandit Queen
