Chris Waller unearthed another spring star in the Golden Rose at Rosehill on September 14, with Zoustar  defeating a strong field to take out the Group One contest over 1400m. The son of Northern Meteor had to do plenty of work from the widest gate in the 17 horse field but proved too strong for his rivals, many of whom he is likely to meet again in the Caulfield Guineas over 1600m next month. Although he may yet be re-routed to the Coolmore Stud Stakes on Derby day instead of the Guineas, TattsBet slashed his price from $17 to $5.50 for the $1 million feature. Placegetters Dissident  ($26 to $8.50) and Bull Point  ($41 - $9) were the other big firmers for the Guineas, while Fast ‘N’ Rocking  ($6 - $11) and Prince Harada  ($4.50 - $8) eased after finishing down the field.

2012 Melbourne Cup runner-up Fiorente scored a strong win in the Group Two Dato Tan Chin Nam Stakes at Moonee Valley to show that he is on track for another profitable campaign and shortened for both the Cox Plate  ($16 - $10) and Melbourne Cup  ($10 - $8.50) on the back of that performance. The Gai Waterhouse trained entire is also entered in the Caulfield Cup  but is likely to tackle the Cox Plate on the way to his main aim at Flemington. Unbeaten mare Atlantic Jewel  scored an effortless victory in the Group Two Stocks Stakes to tighten her grip on favouritism for the 2040m feature to be run at the track on October 26.

There was plenty of movement in the Thousand Guineas market on the weekend, with a host of big priced contenders rocketing into contention for the race following strong performances. May’s Dream , the daughter of 2003 Melbourne Cup runner-up She’s Archie, produced an eye catching run in the opening event at Moonee Valley to firm for the Group One race for fillies, while another well-bred galloper caught the eye at Morphettville. Star Fashion  ($101 - $17), out of Hong Kong Derby winner Elegant Fashion, flew home over a mile in Adelaide at just her third career start and gives the impression she can be competitive during the Spring Carnival.
