Superstar mare Atlantic Jewel  returns from a 16 month layoff when she tackles a star-studded field in the Memsie Stakes at Caulfield on Saturday, with the race to be run as a Group One contest for the first time. The Mark Kavanagh trained mare has been plagued by injury throughout her career and has been restricted to just seven starts but has won them all in devastating fashion. Having taken out the 1000 Guineas and All Aged Stakes at the top level, she is one of eight Group One winners in the thirteen horse field, which also contains Melbourne Cup winner Green Moon .

That pair are just two of nine horses in the field that will be first up from a spell and that has been a key trend for horses that have taken out this event, with six of the past eight winners commencing their spring campaign in the race. Another stat of note is the fact that four year-olds have taken out five of the past six renewals, and AJC Derby winner It’s A Dundeel , Australian Cup winner Super Cool , Australian Guineas winner Ferlax  and Ajeeb  represent that generation in this year’s contest.

A host of stayers including last year’s Melbourne Cup runner-up Fiorente , Seville  and My Quest For Peace  begin their preparations for the Cups in this event, while the Kiwis are represented by 2012 New Zealand Derby winner Silent Achiever . Happy Trails  and Second Effort  will be out to improve on their placings behind Sincero in the race twelve months ago, while former West Australian galloper Luckygray  completes the field.
