Few players have dominated a course like Tiger Woods has Firestone Country Club, where this week’s World Golf Championship - Bridgestone Invitational is being held. In 2009, he held aloft the trophy for the seventh time, but he has failed to triumph the following three years, with Hunter Mahan, Adam Scott and Keegan Bradley victorious.

Before this year, there were three other events Woods had won six or more times. In 2013, he has collected the spoils in each of those; the Arnold Palmer Invitational; Farmers Insurance Open; and WGC – Cadillac Championship. He comes in to this event in solid form, too, after tying for sixth in the British Open at Muirfield.

Adam Scott could have nailed his second major of the year but for the second year straight, fell apart down the stretch in The Open. He led from start to finish at Firestone in 2011 and he has finished in the top ten on two other occasions

Phil Mickelson is the form player coming in to the tournament on the back of his win at Muirfield, as well as his victory prior to that in the Scottish Open. He has four top tens in this event, but it hasn’t consistently been one of his better tournaments. In saying that, neither was the British Open until earlier this month.

Henrik Stenson was the other player to excel on links courses the past few weeks, finishing tied for third in the Scottish Open before he backed that up with a solo second at Muirfield. He leads the PGA Tour in driving accuracy, which will be important this week given that the 49 per cent of fairways hit last year at Firestone was the fourth lowest of all courses in 2012.

Jason Day is the other Australian with a big show. He tied for fourth when countryman Scott won in 2011, and he has finished in the top three on three occasions this year without cracking it for a win. Englishman Lee Westwood is one of the other players to show a liking for Firestone; he has finished in the top ten there in three of his last five appearances in the Bridgestone Invitational. He comes in to the event on the back of his tie for third at Muirfield.
