Despite drawing awkwardly in barrier 12, Guelph  remains one of the leading contenders for the Blue Diamond Stakes at Caulfield on Saturday, with stable jockey Kerrin McEvoy electing to ride the daughter of Exceed And Excel in preference to the other two Darley runners engaged in the race. Since returning from a spell after running second in the Widden Stakes behind Brilliant Bisc in October, Guelph has been ultra-impressive winning in both Sydney and Melbourne but McEvoy suggested that there was little to choose between her and Metastasio , who scored a soft win in the Listed Chairman’s Stakes last time out. Peter Snowden also saddles up Montsegur , who was comfortably held by Guelph in the Group Three Blue Diamond Prelude a fortnight ago.

South Australian speedster Miracles Of Life  could present the biggest obstacle to Darley take out the Caulfield feature for the second time in three years, having won her three racetrack appearances by a combined margin of 18.5 lengths. In a true story of the battlers taking on a racing powerhouse, Miracles Of Life is trained by unheralded trainer Daniel Clarken and will be ridden by apprentice Lauren Stojakovic, who was retained as the rider despite several senior jockeys putting their hands up for the mount.

Champion trainer Peter Moody will have four starters in the $1 million contest, with Thermal Current  the most fancied of his runners, and also the most fancied colt or gelding facing the starter. He is one of eight gallopers yet to win a race going into this event and will be bidding to become the first maiden to win since Principality was successful in 1995.
