Feature Race Preview February 16

The Vanity (MR5) – Several promising fillies make their reappearance in this race, but it could be one with race fitness on her side that takes this event out. Royal Scandal won her first two starts this preparation at the provincials before coming to town and finishing fourth with a big weight at Caulfield last time out. Drawn better in barrier one and on the minimum weight, she should improve. You’re So Good was impressive on debut before being hampered by a big weight at Sandown last time out and looks progressive, while the same could be said of Royal Amati, who got better with every start last campaign but could find this too short. Kazanluk was a Group Two winner last time in and will be competitive in this company.
Selections: Royal Scandal, Kazanluk, You’re So Good, Royal Amati

C.S Hayes Stakes (MR6) – This event is likely to be a valuable guide to the rich Australian Guineas in a fortnight, with several gallopers looking to go on to that race. Royal Haunt led from start to finish in the Manfred Stakes last time out and should race well on the speed again in a race that appears to lack an abundance of pace. Highly regarded Hosting is well drawn again and should be fitter for his reappearance at Caulfield, while the unbeaten Philippi is another with a big reputation to uphold. Sheer Talent will be finishing strongly and appreciate the step up to 1400m, while Group One placegetter Albrecht meets his rivals much better off at the weights than in the Manfred, but was disappointing there.
Selections: Royal Haunt, Albrecht, Sheer Talent, Hosting

Lightning Stakes (MR7) – Despite probably being the worst betting race of the day, the Lightning Stakes will undoubtedly be the race that generates the most interest. While unbeaten superstar Black Caviar appears almost certain to win, the race to finish second behind her will be well contested, and TattsBet is offering a market without the great mare. Moment Of Change is probably the second best horse in the race but is untested over 1000m and down the Flemington straight, something that cannot be said of Peter Moody’s other runner, Golden Archer. He has three wins and two seconds from six runs down the straight. Shamexpress and Satin Shoes finished third in the past two renewals of the Group One Coolmore Stud Stakes here and have been set for this.
Selections: Black Caviar, Golden Archer, Shamexpress, Moment Of Change
