The fixture that kicked off this season will be more than just a meeting of marquee men Alessandro Del Piero and Emile Heskey this time around, with two of the competition’s in-form teams coming together after both winning their last three league matches.

Newcastle fielded the only all Australian 1st XI last week, and that faith in local talent is paying dividend with Adam Taggart leading the league in goals, nabbing five in his last two games. After bagging a brace against Brisbane Roar, he followed that up with a hat-trick last week against the hapless Melbourne Heart. Newcastle gaffer Gary van Egmond suggested Englishman Heskey will start this weekend, more than likely replacing youngster Andrew Hoole , with the in-form Taggart moving to the wing. Questions remain, however, as to whether tinkering with a winning formula will pay dividends for the Jets.

Sydney FC has relished the return of maestro Del Piero after a poor start to the season, but never in their history have they won four in a row. And while they have found some form in the past few weeks, two of their three wins have come with 10-men , meaning they are now without Pedj Bojic and Tiago Calvano (suspended) against an essentially full-strength Jets squad
