This week’s Friday night game sees the Mariners appear at home for the first time under new boss Phil Moss. They welcome Melbourne Victory in a match where the two teams will strive to cement an identity after the recent departures of the league’s two best coaches.

Melbourne will be buoyed by their 3-0 victory over Adelaide last week with just 10 men , while Moss and the Mariners enjoyed a winning start to his tenure with a close 2-1 triumph over the injury-stricken Perth Glory. This match will be an intriguing one for both teams, testing whether or not the Victory really do have a problem away from home (they are yet to win on the road this season) and Moss will want to keep his men on track to prove he has what it takes to keep the club punching above its weight.

The Victory have had a tough time in its games against the Mariners, managing just two wins in the teams’ last 10 meetings, but the on-fire Archie Thompson has scored in three of his last four appearances in the A-League so going forward shouldn’t be an issue. They will be without Leigh Broxham and Adrian Leijer (suspensions) so the full strength Mariners could take advantage in transition, especially with the inventive Marcos Flores directing traffic. Still, if they can produce the same gutsy performance as last week, they should be able to remain competitive against the champions.
