Perth Looks To Crack Adelaide Fortress

As befitting a team which has some of the longest treks in the A-League, Perth has an abysmal away record this season. Glory has just one win and one draw from seven starts on the road, but, surprisingly, they managed to share the points last time they took on second-placed Adelaide United at Hindmarsh Stadium. That result is just one of two occasions this campaign where the Reds haven’t taken full points in front of their home fans.

Perth should have collected maximum points from its clash with Sydney FC at the weekend, but after Shane Smeltz twice put them in front , the visitors managed to salvage a draw thanks to an 82nd-minute goal from Seb Ryall.  Billy Mehmet left for Thailand last week after playing second fiddle to the New Zealand star over the past season-and-a-half, which was bad timing as the former Ireland under-21 international scored on his last two visits to the City of Churches.  Perth has just 16 goals this campaign, less than any other team in the competition.  Glory announced this week they won't be chasing Michael Owen's signature, as speculated, but they definitely need more spark up front.

Adelaide was lucky to escape from Newcastle with a point, and had ‘keeper Eugene Galekovic to thank after two critical saves either side of half-time. After a blistering start to the season, the Reds have cooled off the past few weeks. The 6-1 thumping by Western Sydney just before Christmas was followed by their only loss of the season at home when Brisbane posted the game’s solitary goal .

Hindmarsh Stadium has been a fortress for the South Australians this year, though. Six wins and draw from eight starts is a fantastic return. Don’t expect Perth to cross the Nullabor and play free flowing football; in six of their seven away matches there have been under 2.5 goals . Glory has won on two of the last three occasions they’ve visited Adelaide, and in six of the last nine encounters there has been a red card .
