Angels Pray For Playoff Miracle

Despite sweeping the Chicago White Sox over the weekend, the Los Angeles Angels remain in a dogfight for an American League wildcard berth. They play six games against the Seattle Mariners over the next nine days, starting with Wednesday morning’s match-up in Anaheim.

The Mariners -out of playoff contention - are likely to have impressive rookie right-hander Erasmo Ramirez on the mound. The Nicaraguan native notched up his first win in the majors in a 4-3 decision over Toronto earlier this month, before taking a shutout in to the ninth before allowing two runs in against Baltimore last week.

Even more impressive is the Angels’ Zack Grienke, who has gone 4-0 with an ERA of just 1.60 over his last six games. During that period, he has held his opponents to a batting average of just .184. The Angels’ bats haven’t backed him up, though, scoring just three runs over his last two starts.

Don’t expect a high scoring encounter in the Angels’ final home stand of the year. As much as the home side is struggling with the wood, Seattle is 1 for 39 with runners in scoring position across its last five matches. Regardless of the score, LA needs to win to keep the heat on Oakland and Baltimore in the wildcard standings.
