2003 champion Andy Roddick  awaits Bernard Tomic  in the 2nd round of the US Open, after the Australian overcame a slow start to beat Argentine Carlos Berlocq in the opening round of the tournament. After starting slowly against Berlocq, Tomic fought back to win in four sets . The 20 year-old, who was eliminated in the second round of the event last year, has shown glimpses of form recently but hasn’t beaten a player ranked higher than his win over Fernando Verdasco at the Australian Open in January.

20th seed Roddick recorded a comfortable 6-3 6-4 6-4 straight sets win  over compatriot Rhyne Williams in his opening match and remains on course for another strong showing at his favourite event. The 30 year-old has reached the quarter finals at Flushing Meadows in eight of the past eleven years. Despite having won two ATP events in 2012, the world number 22's recent form has been patchy, highlighted by a defeat to lowly ranked Belgian Steve Darcis a fortnight ago.

Two other Australian's remain in the Men's Single draw and they also have tricky second round matches. 2001 champion Lleyton Hewitt takes on Gilles Muller from Luxembourg, while Matthew Ebden  locks horns with 32nd seed Jeremy Chardy .
