Thomastown fishing enthusiast thanks "high tide" for $3 million Powerball win

Friday 17 August, 2012 - A Thomastown man will start retirement as a multi-millionaire after winning a first division prize of $3 million in last night’s Powerball draw!

The man in his sixties said he was in shock this morning after discovering he’d won.

“I’m shaking!” he exclaimed!

“Three million dollars is quite nice, isn’t it?

“I just looked up the results at this morning while I checked my emails. As soon as I realised I had all the numbers I had to call a family member and ask them to double check!”

The winner said he’s got a few plans for how to spend his windfall.

“I’m just about ready to retire so I’ll invest a large part of the money for that.

“I think I might buy a new car too and share some of the prize with family members.”

The winner said he had a particularly unique way of selecting numbers to play in Powerball each week.

“I quite enjoy fishing and for the last five years or so I’ve chosen numbers based on the tide times I’ve seen while away on holidays,” he explained.

“So if high tide was going to be 1.5 metres one day, I’d mark ‘15’ as one of my numbers on my Powerball entry.

“Usually I’d change the numbers I play after my holiday each year, but for some reason I’ve kept the same numbers for 18-months. Isn’t that lucky!”

The winning 8-game marked entry was purchased from Campbellfield Lucky Lotto, Shop 7, Campbellfield Plaza in Campbellfield. This is the second division one win for Campbellfield Lucky Lotto in under two months, after one of their customers won a $720,754.38 prize in TattsLotto on 23 June.

There were two division one winners in Victoria in Powerball draw 848 on 16 August 2012 who each claimed a $3 million prize, with the other winning entry purchased from Springvale Lotto, Springvale.

The winning numbers were 28, 30, 23, 15 and 7 with supplementary number 35. There were also 15 division two winners who took home $62,266.90 each.
