Great-grandmother shows great generosity after $10 million win

Friday 8 June, 2012 - A great-grandmother from Bairnsdale has become an instant multi-millionaire after her numbers came up in last night’s Powerball draw 838.

The woman was shocked when she checked the winning numbers in the newspaper this afternoon and immediately returned to Scott’s Lotto on Service Street where she purchased the ticket to have her win verified.

When she discovered she had taken out the entire division one prize pool of $10 million, staff at the store said she was overwhelmed and couldn’t stop shaking.

“I’ve been playing TattsLotto since it started 40 years ago, and I buy an entry in Powerball every week, but I’d never even thought about winning something like this!” the winner exclaimed.

When asked what she planned on doing with such a large windfall, the great-grandmother said she planned on sharing her wealth.

“I have plenty of grandchildren and great-grandchildren so I’ll take care of them.”

As yet, she doesn’t have any special plans to spoil herself.

“I’ll just go along the way I’ve been going along, I’m too old for a big holiday now,” she said.

“I’d just like to share the money with my family.”

Acting manager of Scott’s Lotto, Marie Kells, said she was very pleased one of the store’s regular customers had won.

“It’s just fantastic – the money truly couldn’t have gone to a more beautiful, deserving person,” Ms Kells said.

“The winner actually came into the store today thinking she’d won $100,000 but said to us she’d be happy with $10,000."

“Little did she realise she’d won $10 million!”

The Bairnsdale player was the sole winner nationally in last night’s Powerball draw 838. The winning numbers were 3, 24, 10, 26 and 16 and the Powerball was 19. There were also 18 division two winners who took home $64,236.85 each.
