MCG Anzac Day Blockbuster

If you haven’t been to Melbourne for a game at the MCG then start making plans. The Grand Final is a ripper, although it’s not a classic footy crowd anymore – so many of the clubs’ members just can’t get in.

You’ve got more chance of experiencing it all with the ANZAC Day clash which, despite the annual gripes, has (since 1995) been Essendon  and Collingwood . There remains an element of the ordinary about the match. Get the train to Flinders St Station, have a beer with the revellers at Young and Jackson’s (say g’day to naked Chloe of the famous portrait) and get the tram to the MCG. And take in the ceremony, and the match.

It’s a celebration of Australian life – with all of its joy and all of its sadness.

This year the winner of the footy match is hard to pick. The Pies are struggling with injuries and their form is patchy, but it’s not so long ago the scribes were predicting a Pie dynasty. They are now writing them off.

The Bombers have had a nice draw, but you can only beat who runs down the race. That was Carlton last week: a fine win, although the Blues lost two players early.

It’s hard to read. The Bombers have shown plenty. The form line would suggest it’s simple to read. The Blues flogged the Pies a fortnight ago. The Bombers beat the Blues convincingly. The Bombers should win.

And they will. Too quick. And James Hird has always loved the day. Essendon by 11
