Tests in the NFL don’t come much bigger than taking on Eli Manning and the reigning Superbowl champions, the New York Giants . Then again, rookies don’t come much better than Washington Redskins quarterback Robert Griffin III.

To say Griffin has taken the league by storm this year is probably an understatement. Picked number two in the draft behind Indy’s Andrew Luck, Griffin has led the ‘Skins to a 5-6 record and second place in the NFC East. Against New Orleans in Week 1, he became the first rookie to throw for 300 yards on debut and win the game. When he took on the Giants in Week 7, he had 347 total yards (89 rushing), but the past fortnight he has really put his stamp on the NFL. In back-to-back games against the Eagles and Cowboys he has thrown eight touchdowns and just the one interception, and across those two matches, the Redskins have scored 69 points.

It hasn’t just been Griffin sparking Washington’s offence, though. Against the Cowboys, running back Alfred Morris picked up 113 rushing yards and one touchdown. It was the team’s best offensive performance for the season, and it was even more meritorious for the fact it came against a Cowboys defence ranked amongst the league’s top 10.

The Giants come in to this match after possibly their best effort of the year to date with a 38-10 hammering of Green Bay. Manning threw for three TDs while the ground game of Ahmad Bradshaw and Andre Brown was effective, picking up a combined 147 yards. Given Washington’s inability to defend the pass this season, Manning could have a field day if he gets going. New York’s defence is a step up, too, for the ‘Skins to face; they recorded five sacks against the Pack last week. RGIII will have to use some of his noted fancy footwork if his offensive line doesn’t give him the necessary protection.

The Giants have dominated this rivalry the past few seasons, winning 10 of the past 13 encounters. The Redskins, though, have won two of the past three, including a 28-14 win in the last match-up at FedExField.
