The first United States Grand Prix in Austin, Texas takes place in the early hours of Monday morning (AEST) and Sebastian Vettel  can all but assure himself of a third straight world championship by winning the race. Going into the penultimate Grand Prix of the season, the German holds a ten point advantage over Fernando Alonso and can stretch that to at least 17 points with a win at the custom built Circuit of the Americas. The Red Bull-Renault driver has been in sensational form in the backend of the season, winning four successive races before finished third in Abu Dhabi after being relegated to the back of the grid for not having enough fuel on board during the third and final qualifying session.

Although Fernando Alonso  hasn’t won a race since winning in Germany four months ago, the Spaniards consistency ensures that he remains in contention to top the Driver’s Standings at the end of the season. The 2005 and 2006 champion has recorded a podium finish in five of the past six races.

Lewis Hamilton  won the most recent United States Grand Prix, which took place at Indianapolis in 2007 and will be confident of another strong showing in North America having also claimed the Canadian Grand Prix in June. His McLaren-Mercedes has been beset by a series of mechanical problems however, having been forced to retire in four of the past nine races.
