Former Australian Test batsman Marcus North leads the Perth Scorchers  into battle against the Titans  in the opening Group A match at the Champions League Twenty20 event in South Africa. The Scorchers qualified for the tournament having finished second in the inaugural Big Bash League last summer and face a baptism of fire against South Africa’s T20 champions in Johannesburg on Saturday.

Shaun Marsh and Herschelle Gibbs will form a dangerous opening partnership  for Perth and will be complemented by a strong middle order containing the likes of Marcus North and English import Simon Katich. Their batting is undoubtedly the side’s strength, although Brad Hogg, Nathan Rimmington and Nathan Coulter-Nile are all more than handy with the ball in the short format.

The Titans, who were 45 runs victors against the Lions in the MiWay T20 Challenge Final earlier in the year, boast an experienced lineup with several players that have represented South Africa. Jacques Rudolph and Heino Kuhn are likely to be key batsman at the top of the order, while wily paceman Alfonso Thomas and spin bowling allrounder Roelof van der Merwe will have important jobs to do with the ball. Despite being part of the team that won the domestic Twenty20 final, Faf du Plessis and Albie Morkel won’t line up for their home side as they are required for play for the Chennai Super Kings.

Australian and South African sides have met in the Champions League T20 five times, with the South African side being victorious on four occasions.
