Defending champion Novak Djokovic  locks horns with fifth seed David Ferrer  for a place in the Australian Open semi-finals tonight. The Serbian has been in fine form throughout the tournament, dropping just a solitary set, against hometown favourite Lleyton Hewitt in his last match.

Spanish world number five David Ferrer has been similarly impressive, although he had to come from two sets to one down against American Ryan Sweeting in the second round before winning in five . Following that minor blip, he sent an ominous warning to his rival with a ruthless 6-4 6-4 6-1 win over seventeenth seed Richard Gasquet to set up a showdown with the world number one.

Going off the head-to-heads between the players, there is little to choose between the pair with Djokovic having won six of their eleven meetings to Ferrer’s five. Five of their seven meetings on hardcourts (like those used at Melbourne Park) have resulted in victories for the world number one, however, although Ferrer defeated Djokovic in straight sets  at the year ending ATP World Tour Finals in November. The duo have met just once in a Grand Slam – ironically in the quarter finals here three years ago – and Djokovic won that match in straight sets  after taking the opening stanza 6-0 .
