The W H Stocks Stakes is a Group 2 race for mares aged four years and older, contested under weight-for-age conditions. It is a 1600m event with a prize purse of $200,000. The Stocks Stakes has been won by some classy mares in the past, including injury-plagued Atlantic Jewel in 2013, Peter Moody’s topliner King’s Rose (2011), Tuesday Joy (2008), She’s Archie (2004) and Sunday Joy (2003). This event has been a great guide to future winners. In 2011, Pinker Pinker finished second in the Stocks Stakes, before a similar result in the Group 1 Epsom Handicap at Randwick and then saluting in the Group 1 Cox Plate at $20. This race was previously held on Dato Chin Nam Stakes Day in early September, before being moved to Moir Stakes Night. It is a great lead up to the Group 2 Blazer Stakes on Turnbull Stakes Day or the Group 3 Tristarc Stakes on Caulfield Cup Day. Mellition was the first winner of the WH Stocks Stakes as a principal race in 1973. A Listed event from 1979 to 1992, it was granted Group 3 standing in 1993, before being elevated to its current Group 2 status in 2005.
