The Stutt Stakes is the first 1600m group race of the spring for three-year-olds and is often used as a lead-up to the Group 1 Caulfield Guineas. Being a set weight and penalties event, it gives the second-tier horses a real chance to win. In 2013, Gai Waterhouse’s Divine Calling won a lowly 3YO Handicap over 1500m at the track, prior to beating home subsequent Cox Plate winner, Shamus Award, in the Stutt. However, some quality thoroughbreds have also saluted in the past including; Zabeel, Canny Lad, Encosta De Lago, Whobetgotyou and Pierro. After a comfortable victory in 2012, Gai Waterhouse’s Pierro finished second behind All Too Hard in the Group 1 Caulfield Guineas and third to Ocean Park in the Group 1 Cox Plate. A four-length winner of this event in 2008, Whobegotyou’s spring got even better with victories in the Group 1 Caulfield Guineas and Group 2 AAMI Vase, before a shock loss to Rebel Raider in the Group 1 Victoria Derby.
