The JRA Cup is an Open Handicap over 2040m and is an ideal race for stayers to test their fitness and class over 10 furlongs, ahead of quality events later in the Melbourne Spring Carnival. In 2009, Shocking ran third in the JRA Cup before going on to win the Melbourne Cup, while in 2007 Master O’Reilly also finished third in the JRA ahead of his success in the Group 1 Caulfield Cup. The winner of that JRA Cup, Maldivian, scaled new heights twelve months later taking out the Group 1 Cox Plate. 2010 victor Precedence ran third in the Group 2 Herbert Power Stakes and then won the Group 2 Moonee Valley Cup. He then placed eighth in the Melbourne Cup. After finishing third to Precedence in the 2010 JRA Cup, gallant grey Linton beat home the Bart Cummings’ trained stayer in the Herbert Power before running second in the Group 3 Lexus Stakes. The event can also be a solid pointer to country cups. After running third to 2011 JRA Cup winner Dream Pedlar, Domesky went on to victory in the listed Ballarat Cup.
