The format may have changed for the first time in the six-year history of the Townsville V8 Supercar round, but Jamie Whincup’s successful formula will be hard to beat.
This weekend there will be three races in Townsville – two 125km races on Saturday and a 250km race on Sunday. Heading into race 20 of the 2014 series, there’s no doubt Jamie Whincup is the ‘Titan of Townsville’. Of the 10 races contested in north Queensland, Whincup has won five, including the inaugural outing in 2009. He’s also been runner-up twice, giving him a 70 per cent record in top-two finishes at the Reid Park street circuit.

Whincup and Garth Tander have both racked up seven podium finishes in Townsville and are the only multiple winners of the event.
Currently Whincup is third in the V8 Supercar Championship, 186 points behind Ford's Mark Winterbottom , and 25 in arrears of his Red Bull team mate, Craig Lowndes . Interestingly, Whincup has won five races this season compared to Winterbottom’s four. Whincup’s problem is he hasn’t won on a Sunday, when the big points are up for grabs. However, this is a good pointer to backing the number one driver at Red Bull in the earlier races.
Like Winterbottom, Lowndes is an obvious danger. But his returns in Townsville are meagre – no victories and just two podiums from 10 starts.
TattsBet is offering money back on Jamie Whincup if you back him to win and he runs second.
