Melbourne Vixens v Queensland Firebirds
Hisense Arena, Melbourne
Sunday June 22 – 2:15 PM (AEST)
The Queensland Firebirds have secured a Grand Final berth for the third time in four years after beating the Waikato Bay Magic 54-50 in Brisbane. It was the 2011 champions up against the 2012 champions to see who would head down to Victoria to face the Melbourne Vixens for the coveted trophy.
The Firebirds get another shot at the Vixens, after going down 52-47 in the Major Semi Final. They may not have had the momentum or the confidence that day, but there's no doubt they head into Sunday's match full of both. The match-up against the Magic on Monday night had the fans screaming for more. Down by 3 at halftime, the Magic staged another one of their trademark comebacks to almost steal victory from the Firebirds. Captain Laura Geitz says her team needs to tighten up their defence, if they hope to match the Vixens in what will be a tough fast-paced game. Coach Roselee Jencke takes the same team which defeated the Magic down to Melbourne.
The Vixens have been the form team of the competition all year, and their results mirror that. Taking out the Minor Premiership, they have been so strong in the finals no team has been able to match them. Consistency has been their strength throughout the whole season, and if they hope to raise the trophy on Sunday, they need it now more than ever. Having tasted Championship success way back in 2009, captain Bianca Chatfield knows what it takes to win. With so much talent across the board, they head into Sunday’s clash firm favourites. Coach Simone McKinnis has worked hard this week to prepare her team and get ready for the biggest challenge of her short coaching career.
This is what every player trains for. The chance to raise that trophy in June. If both teams bring their best game, it will go down as one of the great match-ups.
